The super-fast car tent

Sleep comfortably in the car thanks to the flexible tent
Author: Stefan Troitzsch, Stuttgart, Germany
When you sleep in the car (here: Renault Kangoo), it is often a little muggy, especially when it's warm. You want to open the boot lid, but then you practically lie out in the open. Not so comfortable.
The solution: You throw a tent over the boot lid. That would be great, but how do you fasten it???
With magnets of course!

Instructions for a magnetic car tent

  1. Buy some fabric (not too heavy, in my case 275 g per running metre at a width of 1,40 m)
  2. Make up a tent
  3. Sew in some zippers on the back
  4. Sew in a fly-screen on the inside
  5. Make some hemstitches
  6. Slide in magnets
  7. Close up the hemstitches, so the magnets stay there.

Details on attaching the magnets

That's how you best sew the hemstitch: Sew an additional protruding hemline, with which you can easily take off the fabric together with the magnets.
Then slide the magnets into the hemstitch and fasten them at the desires spots with a seam. 26 block magnets 20x10x5 mm with 3,8 kg adhesive force each were used.
That's what the sewed-in magnet looks like when you peel it off.
And it looks like that when you pull at the entire fabric.
The complete assembly, as well as the disassembly, takes less than a minute!

Cost of the car tent

About 50 euros including all materials:
  • 26 block magnets
  • 9 m fabric at 3 euros each
  • 4 m continuous zipper
  • a lot of sewing thread (there are almost 100 m of seam to sew!)

Notes from the supermagnete team

  • If you use our new plastic-coated neodymium magnets, you protect your car from scratches without having to sew the magnets into fabric.
  • If you use our shrink-wrapped magnets, you can sew them directly onto the fabric (no seam necessary). They are slightly weaker, however, than the used block magnets; you would have to use more of them then.
