When the pen is not in the vessel, the ferrofluid collects on the base of the vessel.
The pen presses a small SuperMagnet into the shaft towards the ferrofluid, which then flows towards the magnet, creating a thorny half-sphere around the magnet.
In this picture, you see the pen inserted half-way into the shaft. The ferrofluid is flowing "upward" towards the magnet.
The ferrofluid generates a thorny surface. The stronger the magnetic field, the greater the number of thorns.
Here is a short Animation, showing what happens when the pen is inserted:

A transparent vessel containing a clear fluid with a small amount of ferrofluid. Ferrofluid is a black liquid containing 10 nanometer small, paramagnetic pieces of iron or magnetite, which is attracted to magnets. When you insert the pen (included) into the vessel, a small Supermagnet is pressed downwards into a shaft and the ferrofluid flows upwards, creating a thorny half-sphere around the magnet.
Since I have this pen on my desk, I can't stop playing with it! It's really fascinating!
